The Meili Snow Mountain region, which stretches over some 1,500 km2 of Tibet’s eastern foothills in the province of Yunnan, is home to China’s first national park. Over the past few years, eco-shools have grown in popularity in South Africa, making children from underprivileged areas more aware of ways to create a healthy environment and teaching them how to cultivate their own garden. 700 such classes are already up and running in the country, with teachers trained in sustainable development principles. The Alstom Foundation has lent its support to a programme underway in the Helderberg Nature Reserve on the Western Cape. The programme will allow some 5,000 children a year to discover the wonders of nature - a « _first_ » for most of them.

Poverty and sickness continue to orphan millions of children in India, who are often left in an extremely vulnerable position, especially in rural areas. In the Chamarajanagar district, in the state of Karnataka, Alstom has provided funding to build an orphanage that will give shelter to some 40 young girls. The orphanage will teach the girls how to achieve self-sufficiency when it comes to food through the use of sustainable development practices. Largely built using recycled materials, the orphanage will provide sufficient drinking water to meet the needs of both the building itself and the surrounding area.

Poverty and sickness continue to orphan millions of children in India, who are often left in an extremely vulnerable position, especially in rural areas. In the Chamarajanagar district, in the state of Karnataka, Alstom has provided funding to build an orphanage that will give shelter to some 40 young girls. The orphanage will teach the girls how to achieve self-sufficiency when it comes to food through the use of sustainable development practices. Largely built using recycled materials, the orphanage will provide sufficient drinking water to meet the needs of both the building itself and the surrounding area.

La misère et la maladie font encore en Inde des millions d’orphelins, parfois réduits à une précarité extrême, en particulier dans les zones rurales. À Chamarajanagar (État du Karnataka), Alstom finance la construction d’un orphelinat qui permettra d’abriter une quarantaine de jeunes filles. L’éducation qu’elles y recevront leur permettra d’accéder à l’auto-suffisance alimentaire, en pratiquant des modes de culture durable. Le bâtiment, construit en majeure partie avec des matériaux recyclés, fournira de l’eau potable, non seulement pour les besoins de l’orphelinat, mais aussi pour le voisinage.

The Meili Snow Mountain region, which stretches over some 1,500 km2 of Tibet’s eastern foothills in the province of Yunnan, is home to China’s first national park. The Alstom Foundation has teamed up with the European Union and NGO, The Nature Conservancy, to help protect this area of striking beauty and improve living conditions for local people. The Foundation’s work in the region of Meili Mountain and Laojun Mountain ensures a successful blend of socio-economic development and environmental protection through campaigns to foster the growth of ecotourism in keeping with nature and the ancestral traditions of the Naxi and Tibetan minorities, to cultivate and regulate the growth of medicinal plants and to promote the use of renewable energy.
